Meanings for Memory – Rhymes

Bustin’ Out Some Rhymes

The next way we can add meaning to help us remember is through rhymes.

Cast your mind back to school when you were learning so many new things? Did your teachers use rhymes to help you remember things?

Things like “I before e except after c’.

While not strictly rhyming, I remember one our German teachers using this to an embarrassing extent.

“ei spells ‘I’ and ie spells ‘e’”

“All German nouns have Ca..pi..tals”

“Jumbo German word…Jumbo German word”

For those who haven’t learnt German this may not make any sense at all. For a 13 year old, this was barely made sense but it was embarrassing, if not interesting to watch our 40+ year old German teacher trying to rap out some of these German rhymes.

However, while I don’t remember much German at all, I still seem to remember these rhymes!

Rhymes give meaning to material that doesn’t inherently have meaning and in doing so, helps us to remember.
