G’day,

As promised, today we’ll look at the second ‘D’…Disputing

Picture someone drunk in the street yelling things at you. Something along the lines of ‘You are a failure. You have no talent’. You’d probably ignore them or dispute it.

So why do we listen to ourselves when we say the same horrible, baseless things?

Seligman advises that we think about a wall we have in life.

  • If you work sales, think about cold-calling.

  • If you teach, think about that uninterested student.

  • If you work in management, that troublesome team member or project.

This is something that stops you. That stumps you.

Got it?

Now we dispute it.

This part (apparently) is easy. We dispute others ideas all the time. Now is time to dispute your own negative ideas.

Try it this week.

Notice when you start to say horrible things about yourself and think about how to dispute them.

Next week we will go into more detail on how we can do this.

Using evidence, alternatives and implications.

Enjoy your week!
