Optimism in Sport
By now you get the idea. Optimism is good.
We’ve looked at how optimism improves workplace performance and happiness and academic performance in the classroom.
It shouldn’t surprise you then that optimism also as an effect on performance in sport.
How did they measure this? Well they looked at explanatory style. However, they didn’t do this through interviewing players but by analysing their interviews after they lost games.
Teams that were measured as being more optimistic (by measuring their responses in newspapers and interviews) performed better after a loss than those that were pessimistic. Also swimmers who are optimistic do better after being told their swam slower than pessimists.
It appears that optimism has a positive influence on your health and well-being. We will look into this next week.
