The Power of Plants

 

During the current environment where a lot of us are indoors, the benefits of indoor plants has been increasingly examined. Young people who are renting where you can’t have pets are increasingly turning to indoor plants. Additionally, in cities with little access to greenery, indoor plants gives people an opportunity to garden and access nature.

 

Coulthard proposes that indoor plants have multiple benefits.

  1. They can improve our mood, and

  2. They can act as air filters.

Additionally research has found many other benefits for our health including

  1. Helping with allergies,

  2. Add moisture to the air, which helps with immunity,

  3. Help with sleep by adding more oxygen to the room,

  4. Reduce stress, and

  5. Help concentration.[i]

Allergies

Research has found that there is less mould and dust in room with plants. They catch allergens and airborne particles and acts as natural filters.[ii]

Improved Mood

Those who work in areas with plants

  1. Take fewer sick days,

  2. Worry less, and

  3. Feel better about their jobs.[iii]

Air Filter

House plants can absorb volatile organic compounds that are released by things like cleaning chemicals, carpets and paints[iv]

Stress Relief

Studies have found that when people are around plants, they have

  1. Lower blood pressure,

  2. Lower heart rate,

  3. Lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), and

  4. Handled stressful tasks better[v]

Improved Concentration

Students in class rooms with plants, did better  on science, reading, spelling and math tests.[vi]
